Chemical skin PEELs - Bentleigh, MELBOURNE

No matter your age, certain skincare fundamentals are universally important to maintain lifelong healthy skin. Skin ageing is influenced by genetic and environmental factors, including sun exposure, dehydration, certain medications, and smoking. These factors can lead to an uneven or blotchy skin appearance characterised by age spots, uneven pigmentation, broken capillaries, fine lines, and deep wrinkles. For those seeking a chemical peel in Melbourne for the neck, face, or hands to enhance their skin’s look and texture, Medical Skin Peels at Medix Skincare & Laser Clinic are an excellent choice. We also provide chemical peels for addressing acne scars and various other skin concerns.

What is chemical peel?

Skin is a dynamic organ. Each day, cells divide in the deep skin layer and migrate to the surface layer known as the epidermis. As new cells form, old cells shed from the epidermis. A medical peel for the face or other areas involves applying a chemical solution that accelerates the exfoliation of these dead skin cells. Skin peel treatments function by removing different layers of the skin, allowing damaged cells to give way to fresher ones during the healing process. This stimulation encourages the underlying skin layers to generate new collagen and elastin, resulting in a healthier and more youthful appearance.

Various types of peels are available, categorised as superficial, medium, and deep. In our clinic, we primarily use superficial and medium peels that target the top layers of dead skin cells. Medical peels typically employ alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids like glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acid. Whether you opt for a glycolic acid peel or a lactic acid peel, regular treatment sessions are advisable to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin, diminishing the appearance of pigmentation, acne, and acne scars. Beyond the face, medical peels are effective on other sun-damaged, unevenly pigmented, or scarred body areas, including the hands, neck, décolleté, and arms.

Types of peels

Aspect Dr lactobotanical peel

Lactobotanical peel is an Alpha-hydroxy acid peel(AHA), derived from milk, which is combined with Canadian Willow Herb (an anti-inflammatory botanical) to create a unique peel with minimal downtime. In combination these ingredients target the surface layer or the skin (epidermis), breaking down the “glue” that holds the skin cells together, enabling faster cellular turnover, while attracting water. L-Lactic acid is amazing for treating acne, hyperpigmentation and dehydration, without the irritation. Lactobotanical peels come in a variety of strengths. They have a pH of 2.9-3.15, with lactic acid concentrations of 20%, 30%, 40% and 60%. We begin with the 20% strength peel (the mildest), and increase it every two weeks according to your skin reaction. This allows us to find the best peel for your skin, while minimising the risk of getting side effects because of a peel that’s too strong. A course of 3 -6 peels is recommended, with one peel every 2-3 weeks. Skin needs to be prepared with homecare products including Vitamin A and C. Depending on the strength of the peel your skin may appear flushed and feel tight for several days and discoloration may temporarily darken before peeling away. Increase in breakouts may be expected after initial treatments and indicates positive progress. There is a possibility of light to moderate peeling, which starts after day 2 or 3 and lasts for up to a week. Application of Physical sun block and sun avoidance is required after any peel.

CosMedix deep Sea - marine polishing peel

A non-acid peel that utilizes manual exfoliation through the physical penetration of marine-based ingredients deep within the epidermis. Instead of using acids to dissolve skin cells and exfoliate the skin, it uses Coral and Seaweed extract to stimulate cellular renewal and regeneration as well as improving blood flow, oxygen and nutrient supply to the skin resulting in smoother, denser, more hydrated skin.

This peel works well to treat fine lines and wrinkles, photo-damage, mild problem skin and pitted scarring.
Deep Sea Peel is effective due to the chemical reaction that occurs when the sea herbs are massaged into the skin. The first concept to understand is that this peel’s effect is directly related to the level of absorption which is maximised through circular massage movements. The longer and deeper the massage, the deeper the peel penetration (and the more discomfort the client will feel).

This peel requires 3 weeks preparation for medium to darker skin tones using homecare products. A course of 3 -6 peels is recommended, with one peel every 3-4 weeks. Skin redness, soreness and sensitivity are normal for 3-5 days after the peel. High SPF sun block and sun avoidance is a must for 2 weeks post treatment. Gentle home skin care is recommended for 2 weeks post treatment.

Key benefits

Smooths out fine lines and wrinkles and improves overall skin texture
Stimulates cellular turnover
Increases circulation resulting in brighter, healthier and more hydrated skin
Can help with epidermal hyper-pigmentation
Stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis
Safe to be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

What happens during the peel treatment?

The treated area should be free from cosmetic make-up. For one of the commonest peeling agents used, alpha hydroxy acid or beta hydroxy acid, the procedure is generally quick and easy to perform. The face is cleansed with cleansing gel and toner to strip the skin temporarily of its natural oils and allow the acid to be absorbed into the skin. The peel is then quickly painted onto the area to be treated. As the peel works, your therapist will watch the skin carefully so that the peel can be stopped and removed at the appropriate time – this can take 5 to 20 minutes depending on the strength and type of chemical peel used. We can also use massage or steam to increase the penetration of the peel. Next, the skin will be neutralised with peel neutralising gel, and finally, we finish your treatment by applying moisturiser and then sunscreen on the top.

What are the benefits of medical peels?

You may gradually notice a reduction in fine lines as well as increased smoothness of the skin. Depending on the ingredients used, you may experience mild to moderate flaking or peeling of the treated area over the subsequent week.

A chemical peel is beneficial for:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • pigmentation and photo-aged skin
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Enlarged pores, blackheads and whiteheads
  • Acne and acne scars

Whether it’s a lactic acid peel for ageing or a chemical peel for acne, we’ll ensure the right peel is used to address your specific skin concerns.

How many treatments are recommended?

To gain maximum benefit, we usually recommend that this procedure be repeated weekly for 4 to 6 weeks to obtain a good result, which can then be maintained with a monthly chemical peel in Melbourne.

What should I do before and after the treatment?

  • Avoid direct sun exposure, spray tanning and sun beds for 3 weeks before and after a chemical peel for the face or other body parts. If going in the sun, a high SPF sunscreen should be applied.
  • Discontinue retinoid acids for 48 hours prior and after the treatment.
  • Don’t do heavy or sweaty workouts within 24 hours.
  • Don’t use make-up or perfumed soaps for 24 hours following treatment.
  • Don’t use saunas, steam rooms, public swimming pools, hot baths or showers for 24 hours.
  • Treated areas should be cared for by gentle washing with soap and water without scrubbing or rubbing.
  • Don’t pick off any dead or peeling skin, as this may cause bleeding and discolouration, or even mild scarring.
  • Avoid waxing and any kind of skin resurfacing treatments for 2 weeks after your treatment.
  • Any skin care cream enriched with vitamin A, E and C will improve the results.

Are there any side effects for skin peel?

During a lactic, alpha hydroxy, or glycolic acid peel, you might experience a moderate burning sensation that can last up to 10 minutes for each layer applied. Immediately after the procedure, your skin may feel slightly warm and appear slightly pink for a few hours.

Some individuals might notice slight redness and skin tightening, akin to mild sunburn. These effects are usually brief and shouldn’t cause discomfort.

Results can vary, but most people will observe a significant improvement in their skin condition, especially if they complement the treatment with skincare products containing vitamins A, C, E, and antioxidants.
