MICRO SKIN NEEDLING - Bentleigh, MELBOURNE

Radiofrequency microneedling treatment

If you’re living with scars, you may think you’re stuck with them for life. But there is now a technology that smooths scars, wrinkles and lines, leaving you with unblemished skin. Radiofrequency microneedling in Melbourne is a new treatment that can reduce the appearance of acne scars and sun spots, smooth away lines and wrinkles, balance pigmentation, and generally improve the appearance and vitality of your skin. It increases the skin’s elasticity and helps it produce plumping, youthful collagen. It also helps to remove eye-bags and minimise pores.

How does this miracle treatment work? Radiofrequency skin needling is the newest star on the cosmetology scene and has given people’s skin new life, removing scars caused by acne as well as replenishing the appearance of naturally ageing skin.

Radiofrequency microneedling and fractional RF for acne scars are safe for all skin types and have lower risks of any side effects than the previously most popular skin resurfacing treatment, fractional laser resurfacing.

At Medix Skincare & Laser Clinic, we offer both radiofrequency microneedling treatment as well as non-needling radiofrequency skin tightening treatments, giving you the chance to say goodbye to lifelong scars and uneven skin tone. Whether you’re interested in skin needling for pigmentation or want to find out how microneedling for sagging skin can be beneficial, continue reading to find out more.

What is radiofrequency microneedling treatment?

The innovation of RF technology is in its ability to restructure the skin’s dermal collagen matrix. Instead of applying heat to the skin surface, like in fractional laser resurfacing, RF energy penetrates deeply into the dermis without heating the epidermis, using tiny gold needles to carry the energy directly into the lower skin layers, stimulating natural collagen and elastin production. As the collagen is released and goes to work, it restructures the skin layers without causing any injury. The beauty of this process is that the release of the collagen and elastin goes to the site of the needling as well as to the surrounding area.

Radiofrequency skin needling in Melbourne has been shown by research to tighten and rejuvenate the skin and improve skin laxity. It can improve the appearance not only of acne scars but also of major scars such as stretch marks and scars caused by surgery.

On the technical side of things, the RFM technology uses a matrix of 49 (7X7) gold coated insulated micro-needles, which are placed over the skin and which carefully pierce the dermis to release localised RF energy without releasing any potentially damaging heat into the outer skin layer (the epidermis). Radiofrequency skin needling affects the dermis by activating collagen and elastin production. The insertions of tiny needles into the skin stimulate the wound healing response that induces growth factors secretion and fibroblast production, which means smoother, tighter and more youthful skin.

Here at Medix Skincare & Laser Clinic, our RF microneedling machine is different from others, as our micro-needles can be adjusted for length, spanning from 0.5mm to 4mm. We alter this according to your skin type, condition and treatment area, enabling us to tailor your treatment specifically to your needs. This also allows us to address a wide range of skin conditions while causing fewer side effects and requiring little downtime. This is because our needles are insulated, so the surface of the skin is not exposed to thermal injury. The chance of experiencing inflammation following your treatment is therefore minimised compared to non-insulated microneedling technology, which has a longer recovery time and a higher chance of side effects such as hyper-pigmentation.

Radiofrequency microneedling treatment is safe and effective on all skin types, as well as for the vast majority of the body, including sensitive areas like the face, neck and décolletage.

Non-needling radiofrequency treatment/fractional RF

In non-needle fractional radiofrequency application, also known as radiofrequency skin tightening, a pin-pointed hand-piece sends focused radiofrequency energy to both the epidermis and dermis, which stimulates the release of collagen and elastin, tightening the skin’s tone and texture through limited thermal effect. This technology removes damaged skin cells, smoothing mild wrinkling and other skin unevenness. It resurfaces the outer skin layers, resulting in a refreshed, youthful appearance.

What happens during microneedling/fractional RF treatment?

When you come into Medix Skincare & Laser Clinic for treatment, we begin by assessing the area you wish to have treated and advising on the best treatment for your skin type and condition. Then we clean the skin of all cosmetics and apply a numbing cream to the area to minimise any discomfort caused by the micro- needles. The numbing cream is left to take effect for 30 to 40 minutes, then treatment can begin. We adjust the energy setting and depth of the needles depending on your tailored treatment plan. Our highly-trained therapists gently move the RF hand piece over the skin, sometimes passing several times if the skin condition is severe, such as for acne scars and stretch marks.

You will experience some discomfort, though this is minimised by the numbing cream applied before treatment began. After the skin needling treatment, we use a cooling mask to calm the skin, then we apply after-care cream that will improve the results of the treatment while also preventing any irritation or other side effects. Microneedle therapy can take more than one hour, including the time taken for the numbing cream to have its full effect. There is no recovery time needed.

How many RF treatments are recommended?

We achieve the best results through a program of five treatments with six weeks between each treatment to allow maximum time for collagen and elastin production and skin rejuvenation. For serious conditions, additional skin needling may be necessary after a few months or so.

What should I do before and after the treatment?

  • It is best to stay out of the sun for the month preceding your microneedling treatment, as well as after treatment. If you know you’ll be exposed to the sun, make sure you apply a high SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays.
  • No other skin treatments should be undertaken in the three weeks preceding and following your treatment. This includes waxing, peeling, laser treatments and any kind of skin resurfacing.
  • Please ensure the area to be treated is cleanly shaven and hair-free for your treatment.
  • All metal and jewellery must be removed before the treatment.
  • Avoid water and hot showers for a day, and don’t scrub, scratch or rub the treated area until your skin is healed.
  • Avoid vigorous workouts, saunas and pools for a week after after your treatment.
  • Don’t wear make-up until any redness and swelling has gone away.
  • If having treatment on your hands, don’t do the dishes for 4 days after your appointment. This should be the more enjoyable of the after-treatment procedures!
  • Protect your hands with breathable cotton gloves when driving.

Are there any side effects for RF treatment?

Radiofrequency skin needling does not have any serious side effects, so this treatment does not require you to take extra time out of your normal day. You may experience some mild redness and swelling post microneedling treatment, which can last for a few days. Applying a cooling gel such as aloe vera may help if you’re experiencing any discomfort when you’re at home.

Microneedling for acne scars or stretch marks requires a tougher approach, and the area treated may develop a light crust that will flake over the coming days as the skin regenerates. This regeneration process can last from 3 days to 3 weeks. We recommend you use nourishing moisturisers and protect your skin during this time.
