  • Is Laser Hair Removal really worth it?

Is Laser Hair Removal really worth it?

Hair removal is one of the most frequently requested services at laser clinics and it is popular among people across many demographics and regions of the world. The ever rising need and demand for hair removal services in past years has led to an equally rapid growth not only in the number of clinics offering such services but also paved the way in developing different types of technology to meet one goal: remove those unwanted hairs.

From shaving, waxing, depilatories and electrolysis, the technology made it possible to make this agenda less expensive, time-consuming and painful. Among the often confusing array of treatments available, Laser Hair Removal has gained its popularity among celebrities, socialites and even housewives who just wanted to experience a smooth, hairless canvass.

Is its hype and fuss really worth it?

According to the American Society for Dermatological Surgery, over half a million laser treatments were performed by dermatological surgeons in 2013. Basically, laser hair removal effects through a highly concentrated light beamed into hair follicles. Pigment in the follicle absorbs the light which results in heating the hair follicle and inhibiting the ability for the hair to regrow back.

During this process, the intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth. Although laser hair removal effectively slows hair growth, it doesn’t guarantee permanent hair removal. It typically takes multiple treatments to give a significant hair density and reduction. Periodic maintenance treatments might be needed as well. Common treatment locations include legs, underarms, upper lip, chin and bikini line. However, it is possible to treat unwanted hair in nearly any area — except the eyelid or surrounding area.

There are different Lasers with different wavelengths for different uses, depending on the clients’ hair and skin type. Each type of light can cater to the specific needs of the customer, given their hair and skin type differences. At the same time, it’s effectivity is also affected by these differences. Hair colour and skin type influence the success of laser hair removal. It is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair because the laser beam targets the pigment (melanin) in the hair. Laser hair removal isn’t generally effective for white, grey, red or blond hair because the laser can’t “see” the lighter hair. However, advances in technology have made laser hair removal an option for people who have darker skin.

What to expect before, during and after the procedure?

Before the actual procedure begins, customers will have the treatment area trimmed, just a few millimetres above the skin surface. The machine then adjusted to the settings perfect for the colour, thickness, and location of your hair being treated, as well as their skin colour. The client will be asked to wear appropriate eye protection, depending on the wavelength of laser or light source used. At the same time, a cold gel or a cooling device applied over the skin to protect the outer layer of the skin, as well as to help the laser light penetrate the skin. Now that the customer is fully prepared, the technician will begin the procedure by introducing pulses of light to the treatment area and watching the area for several minutes to make sure the best settings were used and to check for any reaction.

Duration of each procedure varies on the size of the area being lasered. After the whole treatment, customers may be given ice packs, soothing creams or lotions to ease any discomfort. Experts advise that a minimum of four to six weeks resting time before scheduling the next laser treatment.

Is it effective and worth it?

Compared to shaving, waxing, and other alternatives, laser hair removal is clearly the less time-consuming options. It is also the most promising since the rate of growth of unwanted hairs become disrupted after a number of treatments. Although laser hair removal seems costly compared to other hair removal methods, people swear by this procedure as it is actually more cost-effective by producing long-term results. For those who are always on the go and have to shave their legs, arms or armpits more often, laser treatment is the best option.

  • Laser Hair Removal FAQs

    Laser Hair Removal FAQs

At Medix Skincare & Laser Clinic, we offer the highest standard in medical-grade VPL hair removal system in Melbourne. Laser Hair Removal is a fast, safe and gentle procedure to remove unwanted hair permanently. The light used is either in the form of Laser or Intense Pulse light (IPL).

    IPL/VPL vs Laser

Fundamentally, IPL and laser rely on the selective energy absorption of the melanin in the hair follicle. IPL uses a broad spectrum of high-intensity light which has multiple wavelengths that can be optimised for maximum melanin absorption, whereas laser emits a single, specific and focused wavelength. Additionally, individual light pulses in IPL have a specific duration, intensity, and distribution allowing for a controlled and confined energy delivery into the skin, without damaging the surrounding tissue. Since IPL/VPL can be used with different wavelength filters, this system is suitable for treating a number of different skin conditions thus, makes pulsed light systems more versatile. IPL usually also have a larger spot size than laser which results in greater depth of penetration of the light and makes it much faster to work with. Although it’s commonly believed that laser is better hair removal method than IPL/VPL, a medical grade IPL can also deliver the same results as laser with less discomfort and downtime if it’s used by an experienced and qualified clinician.

What are the benefits of Laser hair removal in compare to other treatments?

Laser hair removal is a breakthrough technology that reduces your hair permanently and makes it more cost-effective in long-term. It’s also more gentle on the skin in compare to other treatments such as shaving, waxing and depilatory creams, because it avoids the risk of razor bumps, ingrown hairs, and skin irritation, thus leaving the skin silky smooth finish. Laser hair removal is the best hair removal method for people who have super sensitive skin or are prone to get ingrown hairs.

    Am I the right candidate?

Laser hair removal is most effective for individuals who have fair skin and dark hair. It can also treat darker skin types, but more treatments may be required as we may need to reduce the power to avoid damage to the skin. Since the laser light is attracted to the dark pigment in the hair follicle (melanin), those who have blonde or white hairs cannot achieve significant hair removal.

Is laser hair removal suitable for male?

Laser hair removal is suitable for both women and men. Common areas for female clients include underarms, legs and bikini hair removal while in male clients include chest, back and shoulders hair removal.

What happens during laser hair removal treatment?

    • The laser setting will be customised according to your skin types, hair colour and treated area.
    • You will be asked to wear safety goggles to protect your eyes.
    • Cold conducting gel is applied on your skin to prepare the area and minimise discomfort.
    • laser handpiece is moved over the treatment area to emit light-based energy in short pulses.
    • The light is being absorbed by the pigment of your hair follicles (melanin) then converted to heat which destroys the hair follicle while leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected.
    • Your treatment is finished by applying a soothing gel such as aloe vera to ease down any discomfort.

    Does laser hair removal hurt?

You may feel a short burst of heat as the light reaches your hair follicles which comparable to the feeling of an elastic band snapping against your skin. Your skin may show minor erythema (redness) and oedema (swelling) around the hair follicle which are good endpoints of your treatment and will disappear in a few hours. However, application of aloe vera gel and cold compress will reduce the redness and swelling.

How long does laser hair removal treatment take?

The treatment can take as little as 5 minutes to over an hour depending on the size of the area being treated. Brazilian hair removal may take as little as 15 minutes. Your clinician will inform you the approximate treatment time in your consultation session, and you can return to your normal routine immediately after treatment with no downtime.

How many treatment do I need?

Every laser hair removal treatment, like every client, is unique. Individual treatments will vary according to skin and hair colour. Generally, after each treatment, you will see a noticeable reduction in the number of hairs that regrow in the area. On average, most people will require a minimum of 6-8 sessions.

Why do I need multiple treatments?

Each of our hair follicles goes through different growth phases at different times. Active growth cycle or Anagen phase is when a follicle has all its appendages including blood supply and hair bulb. Since the laser’s beam is attracted to the pigment in the hair, it best works when the hair is in the ‘active’ growth phase and this is why we need multiple treatments to target as much follicles as possible.

How long should I wait between sessions?

The treatment should be repeated every 4 to 8 weeks apart depending on the area and your hair growth rate as each of the hair follicles goes through different growth phases at different times. For example, face, underarms and bikini can be repeated every 4 weeks while treatment interval is 8 weeks for arms and legs.

What are the side effects or risks of laser hair removal?

Laser Hair Removal is a very safe treatment if being done by a qualified clinician. Slight swelling and redness around the hair follicle are normal which typically disappear in a short time post treatment depending on your skin type. Aloe vera gel and cold compress may be applied after the treatment to cool down the area and reduce the side effects. Risks may also include burning, blistering, skin discolouration (hyper/hypopigmentation) and scaring if incorrect setting is being used or pre and post care instructions not being followed properly.

How much does laser hair removal cost?

The cost of laser hair removal may vary from $30 to $500 per session and it depends on factors such as location of clinic, qualification of your therapist, quality of laser machine that is used and mostly the size of treatment area.

What are the after care instructions?

    • Avoid direct sun exposure, spray tan or solariums for 4 weeks after your treatment.
    • Sunscreen with minimal SPF 15+ should be applied.
    • Avoid hot shower, sauna, swimming and heavy exercise for 24 hours.
    • Be gentle when you wash and clean your treated area and keep it moisture.
    • Avoid exfoliating the area for at least 2 weeks.
    • Avoid any hair removal treatment that remove your hair from its follicle, as laser hair removal works when your hair still is intact in the follicle.

  • Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Benefits, Side Effects, and Cost

Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Benefits, Side Effects, and Cost

    and

[row] [col span=”1/1″] Laser hair removal is a safe, fast and effective medical grade procedure for reducing unwanted hair permanently from almost all part of the body. It has been approved as “permanent hair reduction” in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1997. The efficacy and safety of laser hair removal is now generally accepted in dermatology communities and is widely practiced in clinics all around the world.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal is a treatment utilising the concept of “photothermolysis” in which a specific wavelength of light is emitted to the skin tissue and after being absorbed by melanin (the pigment that gives colour to our hair and skin) in the hair root, is transformed to heat. The heat then destroys the hair follicle, preventing the follicle from producing further hair growth. Since the laser can only target  hair that is in its active growth cycle, a course of 8-10 sessions are required to get the best results. Treatment intervals could vary from 4-8 weeks apart and depends on the area being treated.

Who can get Brazilian laser hair removal?

It’s suitable for almost all skin types and hair colours. Putting it in simple terms, as long as your hair has enough colour to absorb the light, you can get laser hair removal. People who have fair skin and dark hair are the best candidates and will get the best results, since laser doesn’t work on blond, red, grey and white hair. The results on fine hair may also not be as good as those on thick hair. The darker and thicker the hair, the better the result will be. Brazilian laser hair removal is not just for females – men can also get laser hair removal on any part of their body. Laser hair removal is hygienic, effective and yields permanent results.

Benefits of Brazilian laser hair removal

Laser Hair Removal 4 Laser hair removal has been the most popular hair removal method in last decade due to its speed and efficacy. It gives permanent hair reduction results of up to 70% without causing any damage to your skin and surrounding tissue. To compare with other permanent hair removal method such as electrolysis, laser hair removal is less painful, much faster and more cost effective and has fewer side effects. Skin irritation and ingrown hair are common side effects of temporary hair removal such as waxing, plucking, shaving and depilatory creams, on the other hand Brazilian laser hair removal not only is the best solution for ingrown hair but it also does not irritate the skin. In addition, it’s more time and cost effective due to its efficacy and permanent results. You can also experience clean and hairless skin during your treatment session intervals as you don’t need to wait for the hair to grow back to get your next appointment and can shave whenever you want.

Brazilian laser hair removal side effects

Laser hair removal is a safe treatment for almost all skin types and no down time is required. It’s a walk-in walk-out treatment and you can resume your everyday activity immediately afterward. Temporary itching, redness, and swelling around the treatment area or swelling of the hair follicles (follicular edema) are all quite normal after Brazilian hair removal. Applying cool compresses and an aloe-vera gel may relieve the side effects. If you have darker skin, you may experience pigment changes such as hyper-pigmentation or hypo-pigmentation on the treated area which may last for a few weeks or so.

Is Brazilian laser hair removal painful?

Laser Hair Removal 3 You may expect to feel minimal pain during your treatment. The degree of discomfort depends on your skin and hair colour and also the treatment area. Laser hair removal might be more painful for people with darker skin because they have darker hair and more pigments in their skin which leads to light absorption at a higher level. For those who have more sensitive skin, we apply an anaesthetic cream to numb the area, especially on the more sensitive areas, to reduce the discomfort.

Thinking about getting Brazilian laser hair removal?

If you are looking for a permanent result with fewer side effects and want to enjoy smooth skin everyday with no ingrown hairs, the laser hair removal treatment is the best option for you, as with only 8 to 10 sessions it will permanently inhibit your hair growth and after a course of treatments, you will only need to get maintenance treatments once or twice a year for those few stubborn hairs that remain.

What is a full Brazilian laser hair removal?

Full Brazilian hair removal, also known as Hollywood, includes removing all hair from the pubic area (front and back). Some women like to leave a triangle or a line in the front which is all possible to do with laser hair removal treatment.

    Laser hair removal cost

Laser hair removal prices vary based on the size of the area to be treated, the quality of the machine used and also the location of the clinic you choose to go to. Brazilian laser hair removal cost could be from $100-$250 per session. You can check all the details regarding the cost of your laser hair removal with us at: <

  • What are the Causes & How to Get Rid of Hyper-pigmentation

What are the Causes & How to Get Rid of Hyper-pigmentation

    [row]

    [col span=”1/1″]

Hyper-pigmentation is characterised by dark spots or dark patches on the skin. It is relatively common and usually harmless, but for cosmetic reasons, it is undesirable for those who have it. Hyper-pigmentation has different types. Age spots, liver spots, freckles, sun spots and mask of pregnancy or melasma are all types of hyper-pigmentation.

    sun exposure, pigmentation, skin cancer
    sun exposure, pigmentation, skin cancer

    Types of hyper-pigmentation

    Sun-spots and age-spots
This type of skin discolouration medically called lentigines, which may refer to liver spots as well. These blemishes are associated with aging and too much sun exposure. Sunspots result from the increased production of melanin as a consequence of prolonged ultraviolet light exposure over the years. UV rays accelerate melanin production and are the reason why we get a tan when we bask in the sun for a longer period of time. The most common areas affected are the face, neck, upper chest, arms and hands. Besides UV rays, simply getting old regardless of UV exposure can lead to an increase in melanin production and cause hyper-pigmentation.

    Freckles
Freckles medically called ephelides, they are more common in people with fair skin. Freckles are a result of the overproduction of melanin by melanocyte cells. They may vary in colour from reddish, yellow, tan, light brown to dark brown or black. They may become darker and more visible during the summer months and directly after exposure to the sun. Freckles are a response by the skin’s protective measure against the harmful effects of ultra violet light. Freckles are predominantly seen on sun-exposed areas and will fade or become lighter during winter months or when the skin is protected from UV radiation.

    Melasma
It is a skin condition seen in women aged between 20-50, related to both hormonal changes (in hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone) and sun exposure. Melasma is more common during pregnancy, menopause, and while using oral contraceptive pills. The skin darkens in patches of tan to brown colour, primarily on sun-exposed areas such as the face, neck and arms. People with olive and darker skin such as those of Indian, Asian, and Middle-Eastern heritage are more likely to get melasma. Direct sun exposure without sunscreen can trigger melasma and cause dramatic changes in skin pigmentation.

What are the causes of Hyperpigmentation?

Overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its natural colour is the main cause of hyper-pigmentation. Also, abnormal size, number and distribution of the melanocytes (melanin producing cells) in skin layers can lead to hyper-pigmentation.
This excess production of pigment is triggered by a variety of factors. Although the main one links back to sun exposure, hormonal imbalances, ageing, skin injuries or skin inflammation and genetic predispositions, as well as some medication can also cause hyper-pigmentation of the skin.

    Sun Exposure
Sun exposure is the leading cause of hyperpigmentation, as sunlight is what triggers the production of melanin in the first place. Melanin acts as your skin’s natural sunscreen by protecting you from harmful UV rays, which is why your skin tans in the sun. Excessive sun exposure can disrupt the normal process of melanin production and cause hyper-pigmentation.

    sun exposure, pigmentation
    sun exposure, pigmentation

    Hormonal influences
This factor is the main cause of a particular kind of hyperpigmentation known as melasma or chloasma and is particularly common in women during or after pregnancy. The production of the female sex hormone estrogen is increased during pregnancy, which may stimulate the overproduction of melanin by melanocytes while the skin is exposed to sunlight.
Taking birth control pills may also cause the development of hyperpigmentation because they cause hormonal changes similar to those that occur during pregnancy.

    Medications
Medications are a frequent cause of sudden skin pigmentation in sun-exposed areas. Medications that can cause skin pigmentation include anti-malarial medications, anti-seizure medications, and minocycline. Ingestion of metal preparations that contain mercury, silver, lead or gold can also contribute to hyperpigmentation.

    Skin injuries or inflammation
Irritation or injury to the skin such as burns, cuts, abrasions and even common pimples may cause skin inflammation. Skin inflammation stimulates the pigment cells (melanocytes) to produce more pigment in both upper and lower layers of the skin resulting in a mark being left on the skin surface that is darker than the rest of the skin. This type of skin discolouration is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This is a condition that usually clears with time, although it can sometimes last for months to even years.

    Ageing
As people age, a discolouration of the skin is normal as a result of genetic programming and structural changes in the cells. With ageing, the ability of DNA damage to repair itself becomes imbalanced and may lead to an irregular distribution of melanocytes as well as an increase or decrease in melanin production. A decrease in melanin production appears as white or discoloured spots on the skin and is known as hypopigmentation.
Overproduction of melanin can form dark spots on the skin, known as hyperpigmentation and it can be seen on any part of the body that has been exposed to the sun for a long period of time.

How to remove unwanted skin pigmentation?

    Medical peel
This treatment involves applying peeling agents such as glycolic acid or alpha hydroxy acid on the area in order to remove dead skin cells and sun damaged spots. During the treatment, a chemical solution is applied to your skin to exfoliate and rejuvenate your skin. Based on your skin type, it may be combined with steam to increase the depth of penetration by the peeling agent.
Skin peel is ideal for all skin types with more consideration for dark skin.
Skin redness for a few hours and skin dryness and tightening for a few days are normal after having a peel. Depending on the percentage of the peel and duration of your treatment, you may experience mild to moderate flaking or peeling of the treated area for a few days as well. Although you will see improvement after each session, more treatments are required in order to remove deeper pigmentation.

    VPL Laser pigmentation removal
It is one of the most effective treatments that can remove skin pigmentation permanently. The light emitted to your skin breaks down the excess melanin in hyperpigmented areas and lightens the appearance of pigmented skin without damaging the surrounding tissue.
Since the light is strongly absorbed by the melanin in the epidermis, this treatment is only suitable for people with skin types 1-4 with no significant tan.
The intensity of the treatment is based on your skin type and the depth of the pigmentation, the mildest treatments work just on the skin’s epidermis (surface layer), while higher intensity and longer wavelength are used for deeper penetration.
Skin redness and swelling for a few hours are normal after any laser treatment. Pigmented area may become darker and develop a crust for a few days or so and then will gradually lighten or shed off.

    Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive resurfacing treatment that can minimise freckles and pigmented spots by removing dead skin cells. The diamond coated head with a gentle vacuum is designed to exfoliate the top layer of your skin which results in the lightening of pigmentation such as age spots and sun spots. It’s suitable for all skin types and colour. While it can improve the appearance of skin discolouration, the results are usually modest, and milder hyperpigmentation conditions are better served by this procedure.
Skin redness for a few hours and skin dryness for a few days are possible side effects of microdermabrasion treatment.

    Products to treat skin Pigmentation
Vitamin A and C are two essential vitamins that you need to include in your everyday skincare routine if you are suffering from skin pigmentation or you are prone to get freckles.
Vitamin A increases your skin cells turnover and helps to speed up the skin cells growth to normal which in turn thickens the skin. It repairs ultra-violet damage to the skin such as sunspots and age spots, and improves the appearances of skin imperfections.
Vitamin C, like other antioxidants, increases the effectiveness of your sunscreens and boosts your skins defence against UV exposure. It has a lightening effect on your skin because it slows down the production of melanin (skin pigments), so it’s very helpful for those who want to lighten sunspots or are prone to freckles and facial pigmentation.
It also has an exfoliant property which improves the appearance of uneven skin tone such as melasma (pregnancy pigmentation), sunspots, age spots and post-acne marks.
Vitamins A, C and E are depleted by UV-A and UV-B radiation even on a cloudy or rainy day; however the effects are milder than on a sunny day so don’t forget to apply your sunscreen on the top to get the most benefits from your skincare products.

Please keep in mind that treatment modality is different for every individual. A combination of different treatments with topical creams may be required to get the best result, depending on your skin type and the type of your skin pigmentation. The earlier you receive the treatment the more effective your results will be.

At Medix Clinic, we offer a comprehensive range of skin and cosmetic treatments tailored to your needs. • Sugaring: The New Hair Removal Technique Replacing Waxing

Sugaring is an ancient hair-removal technique, which is also known as Persian waxing; it has been in use since Cleopatra. Now the ancient hair removal method has been rediscovered for the 21st century and it has just been given a modern and specialty technique making it the most hygienic, effective and less painful method of semi-permanent hair removal.

    Why Sugaring instead of Waxing:

    Sugar Paste is All-Natural

The paste is made of sugar, water and lemon juice. It’s 100% natural and fragrance-free. There are no chemical and no wax resins and it is deliciously edible, very gentle on your skin. It’s suitable for all skin types even very sensitive skin and since the paste is water soluble, it can be easily rinsed away if needed and it will never leave your skin sticky like waxing.

    Sugar paste is all natural.
    Sugar paste is all natural.

Sugaring extracts the hair in its natural growth direction

Sugar paste is applied with therapist’s fingers in the opposite direction of hair growth and then it is flicked off in the direction of hair growth. The sugar paste wraps around your hair while seeping into the follicle to lubricate the hair. This makes the extraction more gentle and complete with no hair breakage from your skin surface thus eliminating the ingrown hairs.

Wax product hardens around your hair causing it to break off at the surface rather than pulling it out with its root, which leads to faster regrowth and ingrown hairs.

These two facts alone make a world of difference in comfort and result, especially for people who have sensitive skin and had a bad experience with waxing.

No risk of skin burnt with Sugaring

The sugar paste doesn’t need to be hot and it is applied at your body temperature so it will never burn your skin which is a drawback with regular waxing products.

Sugar paste does not adhere to live skin cells

This is one of the major differences between Sugaring and waxing.
Sugar paste is water-soluble so does not stick to moisture; therefore it won’t stick to your living skin cells. It gently exfoliates dead skin cells, leaving your skin a lot less red and irritated than with waxing, and it’s safe to go over the skin multiple times to complete your treatment.

Wax products are made of resins, which adhere to skin cells, and because wax sticks to any surface that it is applied to, pulling it away causes unwarranted pain and skin irritation, and it can’t go over your skin more than once without damaging the surface.

Sugaring a safe hair removal technique suitable for all skin types.
Sugaring a safe hair removal technique suitable for all skin types.

    Sugaring eliminates ingrown hairs

Body Sugaring helps eliminate ingrown hairs because it exfoliates the skin and pulls hair out from the root in the natural direction, which minimises hair breakage from your skin surface (The reason for ingrown hairs).
But if you want to be completely free from ingrown hairs, you must exfoliate and moisturise your skin between your treatments.

Sugaring is a semi-permanent hair reduction treatment

After a number of treatments your hair follicles begin to deplete, so if your sugaring treatment is maintained on a regular basis, the result will be a permanent hair reduction, and treatment would be less painful and more comfortable for you.

I can say without doubt that Sugaring is one of the best options for people who cannot get laser hair removal because of their skin type or hair colour or even the treatment cost. It’s a gentle hair removal treatment for sensitive skins because of its technique and its natural ingredients, and a perfect treatment to eliminate ingrown hairs.
